Yes. HowToo prides itself on being a learning tool that produces inclusive digital learning solutions that give people living with a disability equal access to learning. HowToo complies with WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
To get more information on what the WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards are, see https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/.
We are so passionate about digital accessibility. That a free course on digital accessibility is available with all plans for use and distribution within your organisation.
Included in this article are further details about the efforts HowToo makes to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA guidelines:
Perceivable
All non-text content that is presented to learners in HowToo modules has a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose.
Although to ensure your modules are compliant with WCAG 2.2 standards some block elements need your input.
Text Alternatives
- Transcripts are available for audio elements.
- Alt text is available for images.
- And captioning is available for video elements.
Time-based Media
This ensures HowToo learning modules are compliant with guidelines 1.1 Text alternatives and 1.2 Time-based Media.
To ensure you never miss an element requiring your input, our accessibility checker will alert you if you missed a required input.
Adaptable
All HowToo blocks can be presented in different ways without losing information or structure.
HowToo blocks, by design, have info and relationships and meaningful sequence pre-built, so learners can easily convey the structure and relationships conveyed through presentation. The modules can be presented on a range of screen sizes, and orientations, with block elements automatically adjusting for the learners preferred display.
All input required by learners is programmatically determined to identify input purpose. This means that assistive technologies can extract information about the input required.
Sensory characteristics are not used. However you can input these into learning modules, with media or in your videos. Therefore we recommend you read and understand the importance of not solely relying on sensory characteristics of components, such as colour, to covey meaning.
Distinguishable
Colour is not used as the only visual means of conveying information. However you can still input colour into your learning modules. We recommend Creators understand the importance of the guideline 1.4.1 Use of Colour and 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast in their modules.
Learners are given audio control, to start, pause and stop the audio and control audio volume independently from the overall system volume level.
Contrast (minimim) requires Creator oversight. HowToo recommend you check the primary and secondary colours of your module, against text and background colour to ensure they have a contrast ration of at least 4.5:1. You can check your colours against using Google's AA colour contrast checker tool. We recommend understanding the guideline 1.4.3 Contrast (minimum) to ensure your learning modules are WCAG 2.2 AA accessible.
Learners can re-size text in HowToo modules. Except for captions all images of text, and text can be re-sized and we ensure our blocks can be zoomed to 400%. While zooming all elements in HowToo blocks adhere to reflow success criterion. Ensuring that all content is present without the need for two-dimensional scrolling.
Images of text requires Creator oversight. Ensure when applicable text is used to convey information rather than image's of text. There are exceptions, so HowToo recommends understanding the guideline 1.4.5 Images of Text.
Text spacing recommendations of HowToo learning modules has been built into all our blocks. All content elements in HowToo learning modules also have content on hover or focus elements. This includes all navigation elements, text, media and inputs. It is dismissible, hoverable and persistent as per guidelines.
Operable
Keyboard Accessible
All HowToo blocks and learning modules are keyboard accessible. Focus can easily be moved away from focus elements, to ensure their are no keyboard traps. Keyboard shortcuts are not implemented.
Enough Time
Learners are given enough time to read and use content. The timing is adjustable and learners have the ability to pause and stop any movement on the page. (Although this is very limited, for example included gifs play automatically.)
Seizures and Physical Reactions
HowToo has not designed any content in a way that is known to cause seizures or physical reactions. However we recommend that Creators understand the guideline 2.3 Seizures and Physical Reactions to ensure their media is compliant.
Navigable
HowToo content provides ways users can navigate and find content and determine where they are for all users. All blocks are page titles, have a focus order, determine link purpose, have relevant headings and labels, and a visible focus.
Although some of these elements such as heading and labels do need Creator input.
Input Modalities
Pointer gestures and cancellation have been built into navigation of all block elements, which meaningful labels in names.
Understandable
Readable
We endeavour to make all text in HowToo learning modules readable and understandable. The language of the page and parts is programmatically determined for use with assistive technologies.
Predictable
HowToo blocks are designed in a consistent and meaningful way, which helps make each page appear and operate in predictable ways for learners.
HowToo adheres to all guidelines in this section. Including, on focus elements do not initiate a change of context. On input does not automatically cause a change of context. The navigation is repeated consistently across elements and blocks. Components have consistent and easy to understand identification. And changes of context are required to be initiated by the learner.
Input Assistance
Any elements requiring input have built in input assistance to help users avoid and correct mistakes. This includes error identification, labels and instructions and error suggestions.
Robust
HowToo endeavours to ensure compatibility with a range of current and future user agents, including assistive technologies. You can read more about our compatibility here.
Conformance level
HowToo conform to level AA. Which ensure that the learning modules satisfy all Level A and Level AA success criteria managed by the system. There are elements that require Creator input that HowToo are not responsible for, however the system has a Accessibility checker to help Creators learning content remains accessible to conformance level AA.
