Alt text (alternative text) is text used to describe images for people who cannot see them due to visual impairment. It helps them to understand and experience the lesson as non-impaired individuals would.
Alt text is built within the HTML code of the page, and can be read aloud by screen reading programs to describe the image.
Alt text doesn't just benefit visually-impaired people. Alt text will also be displayed in place of an image if an image file cannot be loaded, assisting individuals with poor internet connections.
You can add alt text to your images by selecting them in the block editor view. This will open the relevant options in the left-hand menu.
To add alt text to images:
- Navigate to the editor view of your block.
- Select the image section of your block.
- In the left-hand sidebar, select the text-entry box under Alt text.
- Describe key elements of the image, particularly those that that are relevant to the learning experience.
