Using the accessibility checker

HowToo's accessibility checker allows you to check for missing accessibility elements to ensure your lesson meets the WCAG 2.2 Level AA standard of digital accessibility.

While HowToo has many accessibility features built in, users must input aspects such as alt-text and subtitles to ensure the final lesson is accessible.

To check your lesson for inaccessible elements:

1. Navigate to the storyboard view of your lesson.
2. Select the Action button from the top right-hand corner.
3. Select Check Accessibility from the drop-down menu.
4. When the check is complete, select 'Okay' from the pop-up. A checklist of blocks with inaccessible elements will appear in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and blocks with inaccessible elements will feature the yellow accessibility symbol in the storyboard view.

❗ Note: When publishing a lesson, the accessibility checker will run automatically. If inaccessible elements are found, you will then be given the option to return to the storyboard to fix them, or continue with the publish. 

How do I view and fix inaccessible elements using the accessibility checklist?

1. Once you have run the accessibility checker, the accessibility checklist will appear in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
2. To navigate to a block with inaccessible elements, select the relevant block on the checklist. This will take you to the editor view of the selected block.
3. In the top right-hand corner of the block editor, select the accessibility check button. This will appear yellow on blocks with missing accessibility elements. Selecting the button will open the accessibility checklist that will show missing elements on the open block. 
4. Selecting the elements on the accessibility checklist will navigate you to the described element and display a prompt instruction for rectifying the element to be more accessible.
5. Rectifying the element will automatically remove it from the accessibility checklist. Once there are no more inaccessible elements on the block, the accessibility check button will change from yellow to purple.
