Why are image sizes important?
Studies show that when a web page surpasses a loading duration of 5 seconds, users are 90% more likely to abandon it, which can substantially decrease course completion rates for learners.
Uploading large image, audio, and video files to your learning content can lead to considerable delays in loading times and the creation of large course files. Additionally, exporting and importing these sizable files can consume significant time, especially considering that some Learning Management Systems impose file size restrictions.
To address this issue, HowToo has implemented size limits for image, video, and audio files, aiming to optimize loading times and streamline the learning experience.
Accepted file sizes
Images
All images should be kept to a size of 10MB or less to avoid impacting load times.
Backgrounds
The recommended dimensions for background images is 1920 x 1080px. Images that are smaller maybe warped or stretched on different screen sizes.
Documents
All documents should be kept to a size of 50MB or less to avoid impacting load times.
Audio
All audio files should be kept to a size of 20MB or less to avoid impacting load times.
Videos
All videos should be kept to a size of 150MB or less to avoid impacting load times.
However, if you have large videos, we suggest you try embedding them using upload via URL instead of uploading them.
These embedded videos look and play in the lesson too. So you don't have to worry about users navigating away from your great course content.
⭐ Tip: If you wish to upload larger files, please contact our team with the file attachment, and we can upload these to your media library for you.
Accepted file types
The file types you can upload to HowToo are:
Image: JPEG, PNG, GIF
Video: MP4, MOV,
Audio: MP3, WAV
Document: PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX
Captions: SRT
Note: AVI can be uploaded directly to a block. However isn't accepted in the media library.
Image and video dimensions
Images: Images are responsive, which means they will change to fit the size of the browser window the learners is viewing the course on.
If you want the full image to always be displayed, we recommend using the fit image setting.
Videos: Videos also adjust to different screen sizes, but they'll always keep the 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the wide, rectangular shape you're used to, like a TV screen.
Tips for optimising images
Got an image you love, but it's just not working?
There are a few things you can try:
- Ask the image designer (that might be you!) to see if it is possible to export the original image at a lower quality (to reduce file size) or different dimensions.
- Check out our in-built image editor. This allows you to crop and rotate your images without ever leaving HowToo.
- Compress your image to reduce the file size with free tools like JPEGmini, TinyJPG and TinyPNG.
Tips for optimising videos
There are a few things you can try:
- Compress your videos with free tools like handbrake by reducing the video's dimensions and/or quality.
- Use a video editor to cut up your long video into shorter segments and upload these individually.
